In the last few days different governments have made announcements that will encourage some professional sports to be played again. This is great news for spectators, but for most active sport’s enthusiasts, there will still be a wait until some sports can be played below this level.

Unlike football, rugby has taken synthetic turf pitches to heart. The willingness to accept the different characteristics this type of surface brings has been positive, at all levels of the game. So what is different? If like me, you played rugby, or still do, you will have played on some atrocious pitches..

In most parts of the world, hockey is played on synthetic turf, although a surprising number of countries still use other surfaces, such as natural grass or a hard compacted base. But whilst there are similarities in all these options, with consistent ball roll and safe conditions, most coaches would choose synthetic turf.

The first two CCGrass blue hockey fields have been completed at Tamworth Hockey Centre, based in Australia, with a third one close to completion. Tuff Turf, CCGrass’s long-standing local partner, who started work on the pitches last year, is carrying out the installation.

Hockey first took to synthetic turf back in the 70’s with the Montreal Olympics being the springboard for global acceptance. It is therefore true to say that many hockey players have only ever played on synthetic turf; this gives them a tacit knowledge of the surface, in other words it is instinctive. Max yarn is a 12,000 dtex crinkle shaped fibre, which has excellent play characteristics. The unique shape, based on C8 polymer, encourages “springback” when the fibre is flattened, making it exceptionally resilient. The superior polymer is also soft to touch and incredibly resilient.

Ask most coaches and they will always want to work on the best possible surface, as close to perfection as they can get. Not every club can afford this and not every coach has this luxury. But let’s use this as a starting point for what a coach would ideally choose for his coaching surface.

As gates were locked, bookings cancelled and everyone went home, focus naturally went away from your synthetic turf pitch. This prompted a question from a pitch owner I know, who wanted to understand the implications of a synthetic turf pitch being closed for a period of time.

Superb yarn is a 17,000 dtex (very heavy) diamond shape, which helps make it particularly durable. The smooth shape means it is soft to touch and the fact it uses a C8 polymer, which is a purer polymer, makes it exceptionally resilient.
